Three out of four consumers surveyed by The Packer say efforts to consider food waste are important.

Responding to the question, “How important is it to you to reduce food waste in your life?” consumers responded:

  • Extremely important: 42%
  • Very important: 32%
  • Important: 20%
  • Not important: 3%
  • Not at all important: 3%

To reduce food waste, 43% of consumers reported trying to buy food with packaging that is recyclable, biodegradable or compostable.

Consumers’ responses on how they are reducing food waste:

  • I make big meals and eat leftovers rather than throwing out what I don’t eat: 48%
  • I eat reasonable portion sizes to avoid waste: 45%
  • I try to buy food with packaging that is recyclable: 43%
  • I buy food in bulk to avoid using too much packaging 31%
  • I compost at home and/or at work: 22%
  • I volunteer or make donations to a local food pantry: 15%
  • Other: 3%
