Chances are, if you are a farmer, your parents also farmed. And your grandparents. And your great-grandparents. And your great-great-grandparents.

The reputation of farming as a multi-generational career is validated time and again, most recently through the results of a Farm Journal Media Pulse poll. More than 1,500 farmers from 45 states fielded the question, “What generation of your family do you represent on the farm.”

The most common response was that of third-generation farmers, who represented 32% of the results. Nearly half (46%) of respondents are the fourth generation or more on their family’s operation.

Younger farms also play a significant role in U.S. agriculture. First- and second-generation farmers represent more than 20% of total operations, according to Pulse respondents.
