Mastronardi Produce, Kingsville, Ontario, is significantly increasing supplies, assuming sales and marketing all of Double Diamond Farm’s 140 acres.

Double Diamond, another Kingsville greenhouse grower, plans to expand acreage to 172 acres by 2021, according to a news release from Mastronardi Produce, grower and marketer of the Sunset brand.

The expanded offering is vital to supplying customers in the Midwest and East in the winter months, within a day of harvest, Paul Mastronardi, president and CEO, said in the release.

The company’s recent investments also include the 64-acre capacity Green Empire Farms in Oneida, N.Y., and a partnership with AppHarvest at a 60-acre in Morehead, Ky.

Those operations, and the Double Diamond deal, increases the company’s lighted acreage by 250 acres this year, with more planned.

Mastronardi Produce’s overall growing capacity is 5,000 acres, according to the company.

Double Diamond Farms grows cucumbers, eggplants, bell peppers, tomatoes and specialty items including mini peppers and heirloom tomatoes. It also grows organic items.
