Fresh Direct Produce Ltd., Vancouver, British Columbia, has acquired organic produce distributor Mike and Mike’s Inc.

Private equity firm HKW, which owns Fresh Direct, announced the acquisition July 7.

Mike and Mike’s, Woodbridge, Ontario, was founded in 2004. Former co-owners Mike Fronte, CEO, and Mike Dattoli, in procurement and sales, will remain, along with “an experienced and passionate management team, offering our customers and vendors a wider selection of produce offerings as well as a distribution network from coast to coast,” according to a news release from HKW.

Financial terms are not being disclosed.

Mike and Mike’s which distributes produce, grocery items and snacks from Canada, the U.S. and other international markets, serves more than 200 customers, including national and independent retailers, wholesalers and foodservice operators, according to the release.

“The partnership between Fresh Direct Produce and Mike and Mike’s further expands Fresh Direct Produce’s Canadian distribution footprint, but just as importantly we believe it brings an understanding of the products and operations for a critical region,” Tom Shaw, HKW vice president, said in the release.

HKW purchased Fresh Direct in December 2018, and Mike and Mike’s is the third addition to Fresh Direct since then. The company acquired Islands West in September, and Emperor Specialty Foods in July.
