U.S. fresh fruit exports up slightly, vegetables down
Exports of U.S. fresh produce showed mixed trends over the past year, U.S. Department of Agriculture numbers show.
For the 12-month period from September 2019 to August 2020, the USDA reports fresh fruit exports totaled $4.38 billion, up 1% from the same period a year ago.
U.S. fresh vegetable exports from September 2019 to August 2020 were $2.57 billion, down 5% compared with the same period the previous year.
By commodity, here are exports for September 2019 to August 2020, with percent change from a year ago:
- Apples: $907 million, up 6%;
- Grapes: $728 million, down 6%;
- Berries: $723 million, up 2%;
- Oranges and tangerines: $654 million, up 10%;
- Lettuce: $511 million, down 2%;
- Cherries: $504 million, up 2%;
- Potatoes: $241 million, down 5%;
- Onions: $187 million, down 24%;
- Pears: $141 million, down 17%;
- Carrots: $111 million, up 1%;
- Broccoli: $98 million, down 2%;
- Grapefruit: $68 million, down 1%; and
- Cucumbers: $19 million, up 15%.
USDA predicts big import growth
