In his ongoing efforts to ensure valley residents continue to receive high quality medical care during the COVID-19 health crisis, Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16) brought together healthcare leaders from Fresno County for a virtual press conference to discuss the dire consequences the recent surge of positive cases among unvaccinated individuals is having on the valley’s healthcare system, including hospitals that no longer have capacity for patients needing critical care:

“We are at a crossroads when it comes to defeating COVID-19,” said Rep. Costa. “Our hospitals and healthcare providers are overwhelmed and at their breaking point. It is simply unacceptable that we are in this situation when we have the means to end this pandemic. I implore everyone who has yet to get vaccinated to please do your part to help us end this crisis. The health of our friends, families and communities depends on it!”

Also speaking were Dr. Rais Vohra, Fresno County’s interim health Officer, David Lynch, EMS Director and healthcare leaders from Community Medical Centers, St. Agnes Medical Center, Fresno Veteran’s Administration, Clinical Sierra Visa, United Health Centers and UCSF-Fresno. All said the Valley is in a disaster state due to the alarming increase in COVID-19 positive. Hospitals are beyond capacity -- with hospitals now turning away patients and directing them to other facilities hours away.

Rep. Costa also urged mandatory vaccinations, regular testing, mask mandates and continued efforts to social distance. “I’m pleading with people,” he said. “We are all in this together.”
