The government of Canada is taking public comments on a proposed regulation to ban some single-use plastic items.

The list of banned items includes checkout bags, stir sticks and straws, according to a USDA report.

Interested parties have until March 5 for comment on the proposal.

The ban on manufacturing and importing the specified plastic items will begin one year after publication of final regulations, according to the report; the sale of those items would be prohibited after one additional year. Comments on the proposal can be sent by email to Climate Change Canada at ec.plastiques-plastics.ec@ec.gc.ca.
