Conventional banana imports rise 4% in value in 2022

U.S. banana imports totaled $1.96 billion in 2022, up 4% from $1.88 billion in 2021 and up from $1.89 billion in 2020. 

The volume of U.S. banana imports was estimated at 4.07 million metric tons in 2022, essentially unchanged from 4.09 million metric tons in 2021 but off 2% from 4.14 million metric tons in 2020.

USDA statistics on organic banana imports showed a total value of $312.1 million in 2022, down 3% from $323.1 million in 2021 slightly lower than $314.6 million in 2020. 

By volume, U.S. imports of organic bananas totaled 542,929 metric tons in 2022, off 2% from 555,240 metric tons in 2021 but up 2% from 529,579 metric tons in 2020.

Leading conventional banana suppliers to the U.S. in 2022, by value, with percent change compared with 2021:

  • Guatemala: $1.98 billion, up 6%.
  • Costa Rica: $674.9 million, down 9%.
  • Honduras: $480.3 million, up 78%.
  • Ecuador: $382.2 million, down 12%.
  • Mexico: $263 million, up 1%.
  • Colombia: $228.3 million, up 1%.

Leading organic banana suppliers in 2022, by value, with percent change with 2021:

  • Ecuador: $244.6 million, down 2%.
  • Mexico: $139.8 million, up 5%.
  • Colombia: $99.3 million, down 1%.
  • Peru: $55.2 million, down 32%.
  • Guatemala: $181,500, up 308%.
  • Costa Rica: $341,200, up 5,000%.
  • Honduras: $134,100, unchanged.
