Bananas top the list of U.S. organic produce imports
Measured by volume, bananas led the list of top organic fresh produce imports in 2022, according to USDA statistics.
The USDA’s 2022 report on annual shipments of fresh fruits and vegetables showed that organic banana imports totaled 997.1 million pounds, 12% higher than 894 million pounds in 2021 and 15% up from 867.3 million pounds in 2020.
Imports of organic avocados were pegged at 132.7 million pounds in 2022, up 2% from 129.2 million pounds in 2021.
Beyond bananas and avocados, the USDA reported 2022 U.S. imports of organic fresh produce, by commodity:
- Greenhouse tomatoes: 125.6 million pounds.
- Blueberries: 101.6 million pounds.
- Mangoes: 88.6 million pounds.
- Greenhouse bell peppers: 79.9 million pounds.
- Squash: 72.9 million pounds.
- Strawberries: 69.1 million pounds.
- Greenhouse cucumbers: 64.8 million pounds.
- Apples: 56.6 million pounds.
- Cucumbers: 38 million pounds.
- Lemons: 26.4 million pounds.
- Raspberries: 24.4 million pounds.
- Pears: 20.2 million pounds.
- Watermelon: 14.8 million pounds.
- Miscellaneous berries: 14.3 million pounds.
- Bell peppers: 12 million pounds.
- Greenhouse grape tomatoes: 11.1 million pounds.
- Potatoes: 10.1 million pounds.
- Greenhouse plum tomatoes: 7.9 million pounds.
- Tomatoes: 7.8 million pounds.
