The import share of U.S. domestic fresh fruit disappearance declined slightly in 2019, according to the latest numbers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Excluding bananas, the import share of U.S. fruit disappearance (read consumption) declined from 42.8% n 2018 to 42.7%. That’s not much, but it is not nothing.
While the import share for oranges, tangerines and kiwifruit went down in 2019, the import share for avocados, grapes, strawberries, blueberries and lemons, among other commodities, is still trending higher.
2019 may have witnessed a small pause in the overall growth of imported fruit as a share of total demand, but it will likely be a case of one step back today and two steps forward tomorrow.
