The number of people with salmonella linked to fresh-cut melons shipped by Caito Foods has increased, and the Food and Drug Administration has released a list of hundreds of retail outlets that received the products.
Federal health agencies are investigating a Salmonella Carrau outbreak involving 93 people, linked to fresh-cut cantaloupe, honeydew and watermelon from Caito Foods, Indianapolis.
The strategic marketing alliance will provide cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon and mixed melons to retail, foodservice and fresh-cut customers.
Twenty-eight percent of consumers polled in Fresh Trends 2023 said they purchased cantaloupes in the past year.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the outbreak in fresh-cut and whole cantaloupe is now over. The outbreak sickened more than 407 people in the U.S.
The California Cantaloupe Advisory Board and chef Will Horowitz created The Possible Burger, featuring smoked cantaloupe, to capitalize on younger generations’ interest in healthy eating and plant-based diets.
