Granny smith apples are in a great spot for St. Patrick’s Day retail promotions.

Adding both organic and conventional granny smith bulk or bag apples to front-of-store displays is a good seasonal choice for promotion, Catherine Gipe-Stewart, communications manager for Yakima, Wash.-based Domex Superfresh Growers, said in a news release.

For the four weeks ending Dec. 30, granny smith apple dollars were up 2.6%, which moved them to third place in the apple category.

“Granny Smith has been steadily holding fourth place for the past few years,” she said in the release. “As retailers focus more on core varieties, it has begun to rise to third place. With Granny Smith trending, use the bright green of the apples to convert to ‘green’ at the cash register.”

A social media darling, the granny smith variety resonates well across all demographics and households, Gipe-Stewart said in the release. The variety is most popular within millennial and Hispanic communities, according to the release. Both of those demographics trend to tarter-spectrum of apples.

Superfresh Growers has created a digital content kit with recipes, photos, social media graphics, and other ways to engage with consumers, according to the release.

A recipe for granny smith apple “Cookies,” has been added, a festive and easy way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. More information is available at info@superfreshgrowers.com.
