Each region in the U.S. has unique markets with a variety of retailers. Here is a breakdown of each unique market.

In regard to the Kansas and Missouri markets, Walmart dominates with Supercenters having a 23% market share, Neighborhood Markets 3.7% and Walmart grocery pickup with a 1.07% share, according to Shelby Market Data. This ranks Hy-Vee second with 20.9%. The Missouri market includes about 6.14 million people, with about 2.9 million in Kansas, according to the U.S. Cenus Bureau. Kansas has a 3.8 unemplyoment rate, falling 3.8 points since July 2020, and Missouri has a 5.8 unemployment rate, falling merely a point in the same time frame.

The Illinois and Indiana markets have the largest total dollar sales in the entire Midwest region, topping $20.5 billion. The winner of this region? Jewel-Osco with a 42.04% market share, bringing in nearly $8.6 billion in sales in 2020, according to Shelby Market Data.

The two states combined have a total population of about 19.4 million, according to the census bureau.

Minnesota’s top grocery retailer is Cub Foods with more than $2.2 billion in sales and a 36% market share, according to Shelby Market Data. Hy-Vee and Walmart tie for second and third with around 12% market share. The estimated population in 2019 was about 5.6 million people with the unemplyment rate in July 2020 at 7.6 falling to 4.4 in December.

Michigan’s estimated population is about 9.9 million, according to the census bureau. Michigan also has a per capita income of $31,713. In 2020 Michigan’s unemployment rate fell from 8.7 in July to 7.5 in December, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were just over three farmers markets for every 100,000 residents in 2017.

Meijer tops the Michigan market with a 40% share while Kroger holds the second position at a 30% market share.

Pick’n Save tops the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan market with 57 stores and 35% of the market share, totaling $1.7 billion in total sales for 2020, according to Shelby Market Data.
