Texas Ranch with "Giant" History Hits Market for $30 Million

A Texas ranch founded in 1890 has been listed to sell for more than $30 million and the area is well known for its scenic views where an all-star cast of Hollywood actors filmed the movie Giant.

The Gearhart Ranch located 30 miles west of Fort Davis has been put on the market and is being offered by the relators Hall & Hall and Briggs Freeman Sotheby's International Realty.

“This is the authentic, yet stunning form of West Texas highland mountain ranches,” says Tyler Jacobs, director and real estate partner for Hall & Hall. “Endless skies, beautiful sunsets, dark nights with bright stars and the majestic Milky Way, the Davis Mountains. Far West Texas. This is where the famed film director, George Stevens, chose to film the movie Giant.”

The ranch is 9,155 acres and has a price tag of $30,457,953. Per acre the ranch would be worth $3,327 acres.

Located in the Davis Mountains the sprawling property has grass pastures starting at 5,200 feet and the mountain range begins around 6,800 feet. Cross fencing across the ranch has created eight pastures to graze livestock and the ranch has traditionally been a cattle operation. Grasses on the Gearhart Ranch include grama (black, blue, sideoats), Lehman’s lovegrass, tobosa, muhlys, and various bluestem. The most abundant grasses are blue grama and sideoats grama.

Hunting opportunities are available with wildlife on the ranch including mule deer, elk, black bear, mountain lion, antelope, javelina, aoudad, dove and quail.

The ranch has eight water wells that supply 46 water troughs across the property and the highest elevation for a trough is 6,800 feet. In the past 10 years there have been five new wells drilled.

There are a number of improvements on the ranch with the headquarters including a three bedroom and three bathroom main house with a renovated office studio. A foreman’s house is nearby with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. There are a number of barns, cattle pens and a saddle house on the property. Also, there is a “sentry” rental house located near the main road and an outdoor camp ground on the ranch. The ranch also hosts interior roads to get around the property.

Founded in 1890, the Gearhart Ranch has been maintained as a cattle ranch with ranch brands including the “96” and “O.” A small Gearhart family cemetery can be found on the northern foot of Buck Mountain.

In addition to the family ranching history, the area is also known for being the filming location of the 1956 movie classic Giant. The movie known for its all-star cast that included Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, Carrol Baker and Dennis Hopper was filmed on a nearby ranch just 10 miles from the Gearhart Ranch.
