Sales of organic mushrooms increased from 2017 to 2018, up nearly $13.5 million from 2017 to 2018, according to data from IRI/FreshLook Marketing. Part of this may have been due to the average retail price per pound inching up 7 cents a pound during the 12-month period. In 2018, organic mushrooms made up nearly 14% of total mushroom sales (a number up from nearly 11% in 2017).

Younger shoppers (age 18-39) were more than three times more likely to select organic mushrooms than those age 59 and older, Organic Fresh Trends 2020 found. Consumers in the youngest age bracket were among the most likely overall to buy organic fungi—whether periodically or exclusively. Shoppers on both coasts were more likely to grab organic mushrooms at least some of the time than those living in the Midwest and South.

More than half of all Asian mushroom buyers selected organic shrooms at least some of the time, making this group the most likely overall to buy organic mushrooms periodically. Caucasian consumers were the least likely to buy organic mushrooms overall when studying ethnic background.

Families with children were a bit more likely to always buy organic mushrooms, at 9%, than those without kids, at 6%. Consumers with two or more children at home were some of the most likely to always buy organic mushrooms overall.
