Markon strawberries available in recyclable cardboard packaging
Markon Cooperative, Salinas, Calif., is offering foodservice operators a new cardboard clamshell for strawberries that’s fully recyclable.
The package will be used for Markon First Crop brand two-pound strawberries. It uses food grade adhesives and vegetable-based inks and is recyclable within operators’ existing recycling options, according to a news release.
“Bringing to market a more sustainable packaging option for our members and foodservice operators is an important step in our commitment to make meaningful changes to reduce our environmental impact while still inspiring culinary innovation and creativity,” Mark Shaw, vice president of operations, said in the release.
“By converting the 4/2-pound MFC Strawberry clamshells from plastic to cardboard, nearly 30 tons of plastic will be saved annually from going into landfills,” he said in the release.
Markon and California Giant Berry Farms created the new packaging, and the grower is packing California strawberries in the two-pound containers.
The cardboard clamshells are available in limited quantities to Markon’s member companies.
“Markon continues to be at the forefront of delivering fresh ideas and culinary innovation, and this new sustainable packaging for foodservice produce is yet another example of how we are actively working to push the industry and our operators forward,” Shaw said in the release.
