Progressive Produce recalls onions from Ralph’s, Trader Joe’s

Progressive Produce LLC., Los Angeles, is recalling a limited amount of red and yellow onions it distributed to retailers in the Western U.S.

Progressive Produce received the onions from Thomson International Inc., Bakersfield, Calif., which has recalled all onions it has shipped since May 1 due to a Salmonella Newport outbreak in the U.S. and Canada. As of Aug. 7, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had reported 640 cases in 43 states and the Public Health Agency of Canada was reporting 239 cases in seven provinces.

The Food and Drug Administration has advised consumers not to eat the onions, and for retailers and foodservice operators not to sell or serve them.
Progressive Produce shipped red onions to Trader Joe’s in Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah. They were sold in bulk displays and have Price Look-Up labels with the Pacific Gold brand and PLU #4082. According to Trader Joe’s, the onions were sold from June 29-July 31.

The yellow onions went to Ralphs stores in California. The onions are sold in bulk display bins. According to Ralphs.com, the onions have a PLU #4093 and were available for sale from July 1-Aug. 3.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the onions distributed by Progressive Produce.
