Recalled salsa contains onions from Thomson International
Salsa joins the list of recalled food caught up in a nationwide advisory on onions because of an outbreak of Salmonella Newport.
Spokane Produce Inc., Spokane, Wash., recalled four Saddlin’ Up brand salsas and three salsa verdes of the same brand, according to an Aug. 11 notice from the FDA. No illnesses were reported in relation to the recall. The products, distributed to Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington, were made with onions supplied by Thomson International Inc.
Thomson International, Bakersfield, Calif., on Aug. 1 recalled all onions it had shipped since May 1 to retailers, foodservice operators, wholesalers and processors. The FDA continues to advise against the consumption of red, white, yellow and sweet onions from Thomson International. Although officials in the U.S. and Canada have established red onions from the grower-shipper as “a likely source,” Thomson International recalled all onions because of cross-contamination concerns.
The most recent update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put the number of cases in the U.S. at 640 in the U.S.; the Public Health Agency of Canada reported 239 confirmed cases on Aug. 7.
