Following a summer marred by a cyclospora outbreak that sent shockwaves through the sector, two heavyweights in the produce and foodservice industries are teaming with a bold mission: restore consumer confidence and revitalize a battered salad category.

FiveStar Gourmet Foods, North America’s largest single-serve fresh meal producer, has announced a strategic partnership with restaurant icon California Pizza Kitchen to launch a premium line of branded salads designed for retail. The first CPK fresh retail products are expected to launch nationwide in 2027, with broader distribution and additional innovation planned as the partnership grows.

The line’s debut comes at a critical juncture for fresh produce. The fallout from July’s cyclospora outbreak in lettuce dealt a devastating blow to sales across the produce aisle. Highlighting the staggering impact during the International Fresh Produce Association’s Global Produce and Floral Show, CEO Cathy Burns noted the crisis resulted in retail losses of $280 million per month as 6.5 million households stopped buying salads altogether.

But the ripple effects extend far beyond the farm gate.

At IFPA, Tal Shoshan, founder and CEO of FiveStar Gourmet Foods, acknowledged “it’s a very challenging time in the industry,” sharing that a salad dressing company at the show reported a 50% drop in business following the outbreak.

Yet, both FiveStar and CPK believe their collaborative line offers the exact brand equity and food safety assurances required to draw hesitant shoppers back to the produce department.

“We’re a trusted company for food safety and a trusted retail brand for freshness and flavor,” Shoshan told The Packer. “This is a truly innovative product line from CPK and FiveStar that we think will bring shoppers back into the category.”

While CPK has maintained a retail presence in frozen food aisles for 25 years with its pizza line, the move into fresh produce capitalizes on the restaurant chain’s true core strength.

Michael Beacham, president of California Pizza Kitchen Global, says pizza is only 25% of the 41-year-old company’s business, whereas salads reign as the No. 1 selling item in its restaurants.

Rather than a simple licensing agreement, leadership from both companies emphasize that the venture is a deeply collaborative effort to translate restaurant loyalty directly into retail produce momentum.

“We took CPK’s amazing recipes and brought them to life on the retail side,” Shoshan says. “It’s an opportunity to create demand from restaurant to retail and retail to restaurant.”

Restoring category volume hinges on establishing trust through stringent food safety practices, alongside positioning the products to deliver clear value to consumers experiencing tightened grocery budgets, says Shoshan.

By pairing FiveStar’s food safety track record with the immediate familiarity and consumer loyalty of the CPK brand, the partnership aims to restore consumer confidence in the salad aisle.

Shoshan notes that in times of category distress, consumers gravitate toward names they recognize and producers with proven execution, making brand authority a primary engine for rebuilding trust.
When asked how the industry regains consumer trust, Shoshan said, “One salad at a time.”

At the same time, overcoming consumer hesitation requires offering a compelling price-to-value proposition. Rather than competing on low price points in a commoditized space, the new line leverages premium, restaurant-quality formulations to justify its place in the basket.

By translating popular full-service restaurant recipes like CPK’s signature salads into ready-to-eat kit formats, the line also targets shoppers who are looking for elevated, meal-worthy options at a fraction of the cost of dining out.

Restaurant Savvy Meets Retail Scale

FiveStar Gourmet Foods, creator of Simply Fresh, brings nearly three decades of fresh-food expertise, national manufacturing capabilities and large-scale retail execution to the partnership. Products in the line will be produced by FiveStar and feature the CPK brand alongside “Crafted by Simply Fresh.”

While launching with salads, the partnership is designed for expansion. CPK and FiveStar say they plan to explore additional opportunities across refrigerated prepared foods, dressings and other categories as they build a broader retail platform together.
