The Southeast Produce Council gave 53 scholarships for a total of $53,000 in 2021.

The applicants had to have a parent or grandparent who is a corporate member in good standing with the SEPC and have personally attended at least one SEPC event within the past 12 months, according to a news release.

Also, applicants must be enrolled as full-time students with a minimum of 12 semester hours. After meeting those requirements, contenders submitted essays reviewed by members of the SEPC Scholarship Committee.

The 2021 essay topic was about how 2020 has been a very trying year for everyone — yet the COVID-19 pandemic provided valuable insight into SEPC’s theme for 2021, “Produce: Powered by People," showing how people in produce have brought some positive light to these dark times and how everyone can make a difference in their jobs, communities, churches, schools or home.

“One person can bring a little light into the dark world we have lived in for this last year,” according to the release.

Applicants explained in their essays how they could do something to make a positive difference in this new world we are living in. It could also be something the applicant has done in the past and plans on continuing now.

SEPC scholarship recipients receive one $1,000 scholarship annually. Past recipients are eligible; however, they must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average, and first preference is given to new applicants.
