Viva Fresh accepting scholarship applications

The Texas International Produce Association is accepting applications for its first scholarship program.

The program offers one-year scholarships to students pursuing a degree or certification relevant to the fresh produce industry, funded through $30,000 raised by the 2019 Viva Fresh Open Golf Tournament, according to a news release.

The program is available to family of Texas International Produce Association members, Viva Fresh exhibitors and sponsor companies, and is not limited to students on agricultural tracks, according to the release.

“It’s exciting to see the responses and diversity of studies of this next generation,” Dante Galeazzi, president and CEO of TIPA, said in the release. “We’re proud to support these future industry professionals as they pursue various educational endeavors to meet the ever-evolving demands of the fresh produce landscape.”

The first inaugural round of scholarships honors Leonard Pike, who pioneered the Texas 1015 sweet onion and a professor at Texas A&M University. He died in January.

The deadline to apply is July 31, and recipients will be notified prior to the fall semester, according to the release.
