What do produce shippers need from packaging suppliers?

Industry leaders responding to a survey from The Packer mentioned education, consumer insights and more data on life cycle analysis.

Here are answers from some responding to the survey.

  • “Provide complete life cycle analysis for their products.”
  • “Help educate both the produce suppliers and consumers about the different life cycles of materials. People assume plastic is worse than, say, a compostable material, but they may not really understand the energy demand to make each item and what happens to the packaging at the end of its life cycle. Most cities do not have adequate composting and recycling facilities, which can dramatically impact the packaging upcycle.”
  • “Support and communication are what we hear from our clients. The need for transparency on the issues we are facing, along with working closely to ensure expectations and deadlines are met, is something (we) strive to do as a packaging supplier to make sure our clients can get their product to market.”
  • “Digitally monitor the temperature and humidity from farm to table.”
  • “Find solutions to what the consumers are demanding. Come to us as suppliers for these answers and solutions.”
  • “Every supplier has equipment to sell you. We would get to more sustainable offerings if there was more collaboration/crossover.”
