Organic citrus is shining bright in retail produce departments

The Packer’s Organic Fresh Trends 2023 survey found an increase in percentage of consumers who said they exclusively purchase organic citrus.

The Packer’s Organic Fresh Trends 2023 survey is valuable to marketers and retailers seeking to answer the question, “Who is my organic consumer?” In mid-October of 2022, more than 1,000 U.S. consumers were asked about their organic purchasing habits.

The survey found an increase in the percentage of consumers who said they exclusively purchase organic citrus.

For grapefruit, Organic Fresh Trends indicates that 18% of consumers seek to purchase organic exclusively, compared with 15% in 2022.

For oranges, the survey found that 16% of consumers said they exclusively purchase organic, up from 14% in 2022 to 9% in 2021.

Sixteen percent of consumers said they exclusively purchase organic lemons, up from 13% in 2022 and 12% in 2021, according to the survey.

Organic Fresh Trends 2023 research shows higher consumption of organic citrus for young, high-income consumers with kids. IRI retail scan data revealed mixed trends in 2021.

Organic mandarin retail sales totaled $42.3 million in 2021, 46% higher than 2020. Organic mandarins accounted for 2.2% of total mandarin retail sales, the IRI reports.

Retail sales of organic oranges topped $86.5 million in 2021, down 9% from 2020 but more than double that of organic mandarins. IRI data shows that organic oranges accounted for 7.5% of total orange sales in 2021.

Retail organic sales of grapefruit in 2021 totaled $14.3 million, up 19.4% from 2020. Organic grapefruit accounted for 6.9% of total grapefruit retail sales.

Organic lemon sales totaled $62.3 million in 2021, down 3.4% compared with 2020. Organic lemon sales accounted for about 7.4% of total retail lemon sales.

Finally, organic lime retail sales totaled $33.3 million in 2021, up 24.3% from 2020. IRI reports that organic limes accounted for 4.8% of total retail lime sales in 2021.
