Madelyn Edlin — Marketing and sales manager, Equitable Food Initiative

As the marketing and sales manager for Equitable Food Initiative, Madelyn Edlin drives awareness and adoption of the certification throughout the produce industry.

What advice would you give to growers, packers and shippers trying to attract and retain labor talent?

Attracting and retaining talent is top mind across the board, from admin workers to harvest and production. I think it comes down to creating a people-first culture that prioritizes worker voice and agency. We see this among our certified operations all the time. After becoming EFI certified and adopting a worker-manager collaborative culture, these companies see less turnover and become an employer of choice. It’s amazing what putting power in the hands of workers, and actively listening to worker voice, can do to change culture and attract and retain top talent.

Describe a valuable lesson you have learned that informs your work today.

Always stay curious and never stop learning. It goes hand in hand with making connections everywhere you go and creating bonds whenever you can. We work in a large industry, where everyone knows each other and relationships are key. Over my short tenure in the produce industry, I have learned that there’s a place for everyone, no matter for skill, interest or desire. Making connections, staying curious and staying a lifelong student will open doors towards a satisfying career path that you truly enjoy.
