The fifth Tour de Fresh has raised $147,000, which will pay for at least 46 salad bars in schools.

About 50 riders participated in the Tour de Fresh July 23-26, riding the 300 miles from Lake Tahoe to Monterey, Calif., according to a news release. At the event’s completion a $141,000 check was presented to the United Fresh Start Foundation, and donations totaling $6,000 came in after the event.

“Despite the challenges of the terrain and weather this year, we were able to finish this ride as more than just friends coming together for a cause – it really became ‘Tour de Family’ by the last day,” Charles Nelson of Mission Produce, who raised more than $11,000 in donations for the event, said in the release. “It’s exciting to be a part of something so personal, as all of us have kids in our lives that we want the best for – the generational impact that Tour de Fresh has on families all across the nation is unbelievable once you see it firsthand.”

The foundation’s Salad Bars to School campaign has led to more than 5,300 salad bars placed in schools across the country in the past eight years, according to the release. Tour de Fresh has raised almost $750,000, funding more than 250 salad bars.
