One trend in the fresh produce and citrus packaging space is the increasing demand for sustainable and recyclable materials, says Jacob Fox, sales representative for Fox Packaging, McAllen, Texas.

“Consumers are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of their choices and are looking for ways to reduce waste and carbon footprint,” Fox said. “The right packaging materials not only help preserve the freshness and quality of your citrus, but also convey a positive brand image and social responsibility.”

Located in South Texas, Fox Packaging has been a leader in the flexible packaging and packing equipment industry for over 50 years, he said, serving the needs of shippers of citrus and other commodities.

Fox Packaging has expanded its capabilities to meet the changing needs and preferences of its customers and consumers, Fox said, adding that some of the company’s key developments include:

  • Introducing responsible film options at downgauged iterations that offer enhanced protection, extended shelf life and sustainable considerations for citrus products, such as recyclable polyethylene films and high-visibility, surface-print printing capabilities.
  • Developing wicketed and pouch bagging equipment that can handle different types of flexible packaging formats, such as stand-up pouches, wicketed bags and pillow bags, with features such as zipper closures and reworkable packaging options.
  • Building the company’s relationships with equipment partners as distributors of new technologies that improve the efficiency, accuracy and safety of the packing process, such as automated weighing systems, optical sorters and robotic palletizers.
  • Providing customized packaging solutions that cater to the specific needs of customers, with an emphasis on R&D that is specific to current materials and material alternatives with consideration to the Fox Packaging supply chain’s current infrastructures.

Fox Packaging has been focused on being responsible, Fox said. That means being responsible when sourcing materials, when converting packaging, when shipping it and when communicating the company’s packaging components.

“We’ve recently invested in additional pouch conversion equipment, adding capacity to our existing lines,” he said. “Fox Packaging wants to be a domestic solution to the demand for stand-up pouches.”

Citrus focus

Relative to the citrus industry, Fox Packaging is committed to supporting the citrus industry by providing flexible packaging solutions that meet the needs and expectations of growers, packers, retailers and consumers, Fox said.

“The company works closely with its customers to understand their challenges and opportunities, and to develop customized solutions that enhance their brand value and profitability,” he said. “Fox Packaging can help citrus growers differentiate their products with attractive designs, eye-catching mesh colors and distinctive bag features that offer a structured appearance. Our lead times have been competitive, and our team is always glad to review packaging programs and to make recommendations based on packaging trends and requirements.”
