Peruvian onion imports continue to climb

The total value of agriculture exports from Peru to the U.S. is expected to reach $11.4 billion this year.

Imports of Peruvian onions to the U.S. continue to grow, according to statistics from the USDA. U.S. Census Bureau trade data shows the value of onion imports from Peru has steadily risen 42% since 2016. In 2023, the value of Peruvian onion imports dropped by 16% in 2023.

Import value grew more than 700% from $6.1 million to $50.8 million from 2000 to 2014. Imports dipped by 6% from 2014 to 2015 but resumed the upward trend from 2016 to 2022.

Census trade data shows imports increased by 50% from 104,008 metric tons in 2015 to 156,884 metric tons in 2019. Imports dipped by 9% in 2020 to 143,049 metric tons before rebounding by 13% in 2021 to 161,906 metric tons.

A report from Agronometrics shows agricultural exports from Peru to the U.S. will exceed $11.5 billion by the end of 2024, which is a 2.9% increase from 2023. Agronometrics said data from the country’s Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation shows an average annual growth rate of 11.9% for all agricultural exports.
