Mastronardi earns honors in greenhouse competition

Kingsville, Ontario-based Mastronardi Produce recently earned seven awards for its tomatoes and peppers at the 11th annual Leamington Greenhouse Competition.

The company’s Sunset brand garnered the Overall Best Tomato and Overall Best Pepper honors, according to a news release. It also won top awards for the cluster tomato, cocktail tomato, bite-size tomato, specialty bell pepper and specialty hot pepper categories.

In the bite-size tomato category, Mastronardi won all three top spots, with Flavor Bombs tomatoes taking first place.

“What I love most about this competition is that products are judged purely on their flavor. Flavor is our top priority at Sunset so receiving the most awards at this year’s competition is a great compliment to our hardworking team,” CEO Paul Mastronardi said in the release.

Products are judged in a double-blind taste test by a panel of experts that includes chefs, produce managers, and representatives of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The public then gets to vote on all entries.

The competition is hosted by R.E.A.C.H. International, and proceeds fund schools and clinics in Uganda.
