Tops pilots Flashfood program to reduce food waste

Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops Friendly Markets is piloting in six locations the food waste reduction program Flashfood.

Through the program, Tops can offer fresh items nearing their sell-by dates at significantly reduced prices, according to the news release. Tops will post available product on the Flashfood app, and shoppers can purchase directly through the app and then pick up their items at a designated area in participating stores.

“At Tops, social responsibility and sustainability have always been at the core of our mission, upholding standards that ensure we reduce environmental waste and energy consumption while providing customers with sustainably sourced, high-quality products at a great value,” Jeff Culhane, senior vice president of sales and merchandising for Tops, said in the release. “The Flashfood program fits right into our business model, and we’re excited to bring this unique, money-saving opportunity to our customers.”

Store locations participating in the pilot are:

  • 3980 Maple Road, Amherst, N.Y.
  • 3865 Union Road, Cheektowaga, N.Y.
  • 9660 Transit Road, Amherst, N.Y.
  • 2101 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, N.Y.
  • 12775 Broadway, Alden, N.Y.
