Avocados continue to ride sales boost in pandemic

Avocados saw a resurgence in early May, according to the Hass Avocado Board’s latest report on sales during the pandemic.

Avocados saw a resurgence in early May, according to the Hass Avocado Board’s latest report on sales during the pandemic.

According to the avocado board, using numbers from Chicago-based research firm IRI, avocados sales for the week ending May 10 were up 15.6% over the same week in 2019. That’s up from the 2.4% increase the category saw for the week ending May 3.

For the week ending May 10, avocados performed better than the overall fruit category (up 9.5%), but the overall fresh produce department sales were higher (14.8%), as were the sales for total store with perimeter departments (15.4%)

Recent avocado sales have been up year-to-year, according to IRI data. Avocado sales, when compared with weekly sales in 2019 were:

  • April 19: 10.3%
  • April 26: 18.8%
  • May 3: 2.4%
  • May 10: 15.6%
  • Latest four weeks ending May 10: 11.4%
  • Year-to-date: 13.2%
