Index Fresh, Riverside, Calif., is again shipping Gem avocados, to complement full-size hass avocados grown in California.

Gems, introduced by Index Fresh a year ago, have a short season, April and May, according to a news release.

“Index Fresh tested the Gem with a consumer focus group who loved everything about it. Gem’s flavor, appearance and peelability add up to a fantastic consumer experience,” Dana Thomas, president of Index Fresh, said in the release.

The company says the smaller Gems are an opportunity to expand the avocado category. They are bright green and also come in larger sizes, according to Index Fresh.

“We believe that the Gem is a wonderful extension of the avocado category, not as a substitute to the hass, but rather as an exciting addition to the avocado category,” Thomas said in the release.

The fruit’s thick skin makes it easy to peel, according to the company.
