Mastronardi’s Sunset Cares packaging part of sustainability goals

All of Mastronardi Produce’s Sunset brand greenhouse grown produce will be sold in packaging that’s reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

The Kingsville, Ontario-based grower has set the sustainability goal as more consumers voice a preference to more eco-friendly options in the supermarket.

The company first used top-sealed packaging 10 years ago, an option that’s being adopted by more shippers as a way to cut down on overall plastic weight of containers.

“At Sunset, we always grow with the future in mind,” Paul Mastronardi, president and CEO, said in a news release. “That’s why we’re so dedicated to developing the innovative solutions that consumers and our customers have asked for — and the planet demands.”

Mastronardi Produce plans to unveil a line of Sunset Cares sustainable packaging at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit expo, Oct. 18-19 in Anaheim, Calif., according to the release. Packaging includes fully recyclable paperboard, and Sunset Backyard Compostable packaging.

The company’s goal is to replace flow-wrapped packaging in favor of paperboard, and is working on a solution, according to the release. Within a year, Mastronardi Produce plans to test a new retail model for shopping for snacking tomatoes.

“We recognize that there’s no easy, one-size-fits-all solution, which is why we’ve focused our development efforts across a broad range of offerings,” Mastronardi said in the release.

The company joined the Sustainable Packaging Coalition this year.
