Sponsor Stemilt Growers Inc. and Peirone Produce and its partner retailers in the Northwest ran an Apple Cup competition to increase apple sales in October.

Kamiah, Idaho-based Cloninger’s Harvest won grand prize, and produce manager Amanda Robnett and owners Jerry and Betty Cloninger accepted the trophy, modeled after the Apple Cup football game between the University of Washington and Washington State University.

The runners-up for the retail category are:

  • Barney’s Harvest Foods, Orofino, Idaho
  • St. Marie’s Harvest Foods, St. Maries, Idaho
  • Glenwood IGA, Orofino

This Apple Cup was awarded to the biggest increase of apple sales, both at the retail level and within Peirone internal sales. Angie McInnis of Peirone Produce won the sales category.

Peirone president Mike Kamphaus and Stemilt marketing director Roger Pepperl honored the award winners.

In a news release, Pepperl said the Apple Cup contest was a “huge success and smart of Peirone and its partner retailers to use friendly competition as a way to ignite apple sales of both bulk apples and Stemilt’s Lil Snappers kid-size 3-pound apple program across the Northwest during October National Apple Month celebrations.”

Peirone Produce is a division of URM Stores Inc., a retailer-owned co-op, which serves stores in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. The Washington Huskies won the football Apple Cup Nov. 25, 41-14.
