Seen and heard at Viva Fresh 2024 — Part 1

Sustainable packaging, produce programs and visiting with customers were among the highlights of Viva Fresh 2024.

HOUSTON — It was all about the health benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables at Viva Fresh 2024, where Max Lugavere’s keynote speech delved into how a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables can change health outcomes. Lugavere, a health and science journalist and author, looked at the science behind popular fruits and vegetables.

At the Fox Packaging booth, Jenn Doxey said visitors to the booth wanted to learn more about the company’s ability to build sustainable packaging programs.

“People just want answers [to the push toward sustainable packaging],” she said. “It’s an ongoing conversation.”

North Bay Produce’s reserve Sequoia blueberries were the main draw of the company’s booth, said Angie Bersok.

“That’s been a big hit,” she said. “Everyone is impressed with the size and quality.”

Bersok said the company’s reserved raspberries were also a popular topic of conversation because of the short season.

Diego Morales of D Produce Co. said visitors to the company’s booth have talked about its family-owned and vertically integrated lime operation. Morales said shows like Viva Fresh are so important to the industry.

“The show has been very good and we’ve seen a lot of old and new friends,” he said.

At the Sev-Rend booth, Brittnie Hammack and Brian Burkhalter said visitors were interested in learning more about the company’s sustainable packaging.

“There’s a huge interest in PCR,” Hammack said.
