Syngenta’s Yoom tomato earns top Fruit Logistica award
Syngenta Seeds’ Yoom tomato received the top Innovation Award at Fruit Logistica.
The distinctive tomato, one of 10 finalists in the competition, received the recognition on the final day of the Feb. 5-7 expo in Berlin.
The tomato earned 30% of the votes on the show floor, according to a news release, making it a clear winner after two days of voting by show attendees.
Syngenta Seeds, Basel, Switzerland, received the Innovation Award in 2012 for Angello, a red snack pepper.
“This will be a major boost for our product,” Jérémie Chabanis, Europe, Africa and Middle East food chain manager of vegetable and specialties at Syngenta, said in the release. “And the award is a great acknowledgment of our work as well as a wonderful motivation for our team.”
Depending on the hours of sunlight, the Yoom’s color ranges from purple to black, and it has high vitamin, mineral and antioxidant content and is sweet and tangy, according to the release.
The silver Fruit Logistica Innovation Award went to Silbo, a Polish company, for its packaging with water-based dyes and adhesives. The sustainable packaging is completely compostable, according to the release.
The bronze award also recognized sustainable packaging from a Poland-based company, with SoFruPak Witold Gai’s SoFruMiniPak Eco View. The packaging is made from renewable resources, is sealable and is 100% biodegradable, according to the release.
