Del Monte Fresh gives shelf life tips during crisis

Del Monte Fresh Produce, Coral Gables, Fla., is sharing a list of tricks to make produce last as consumers take fewer shopping trips during the pandemic.

“These tips come straight from the kitchens of Del Monte Fresh Produce’s fruit and veggie experts, who want to make sure that families continue to enjoy fresh produce during these uncertain times,” Elana Gold, chief marketing officer, said in a news release.

Tips include:

  • Have a storage plan before shopping: For example, keep avocados and bananas in open bags in a cool, dark place and once ripe, in the fridge for a short time for avocados and longer for bananas;
  • Purchase a range of produce, some ready to eat now and some that will last;
  • Refresh leafy greens by submerging them in ice water;
  • Chop and freeze some items, including carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, berries, grapes and mangoes;
  • Make smoothies with fruits and vegetables that are “beginning to turn;” and
  • Practice root-to-stem cooking, using each and every part of the item.
