Hass Avocado Board seeks board members for 2020-21

The Mission Viejo, Calif.-based Hass Avocado Board is looking for a few good men and women to serve as board members, according to a news release.

HAB elections renew the organization’s leadership each year by recruiting industry experts to guide and to serve producers and importers in order to further stimulate industry growth, the release said.

“The annual board elections provide an opportunity for industry members to join HAB’s legacy of success in promoting hass avocados in the U.S,” according to the release.

“HAB’S success truly depends on the leadership of our board members,” chairman Jorge Hernandez, an importer from McAllen, Texas, said in the release.

“We highly encourage anyone who has a passion for the industry’s growth and an interest in moving the industry forward to consider this as an opportunity to make a difference.”

The board election process began in early March with the mailing of the announcement of open seats to eligible producers and importers of hass avocados.

The deadline for receipt of nomination forms is March 30.

Ballots will be mailed to producers and importers by April 27, and the board will announce election results June 8.

The board will submit two nominees for each position for consideration by the U.S. secretary of Agriculture for appointment.

Term begins on Nov. 1, and members and alternates will be seated at the board meeting on Dec. 2.

The 12-member board consists of domestic producers and importers of hass avocados and directs HAB’s promotion, research and information programs under supervision of the USDA, the release said.

Some responsibilities of board members are:

  • To work to achieve an effective program of promotion, research, consumer information and industry information designed to strengthen the hass avocado industry’s position in the domestic marketplace;
  • To maintain and expand existing domestic markets and uses for hass avocados;
  • To create new domestic markets; and
  • To carry out programs, plans and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the hass avocado
  • industry.

HAB provides the industry with supply and market data, conducts nutrition research, educates health professionals and “brings people together from all corners of the industry to collectively work towards growth that benefits everyone,” the release said.

The organization provides funds to California and importer associations to benefit specific countries of origin in promoting their avocado brands to customers and consumers across the U.S.

“The board seeks skill sets and diversity that energetically pursue its mission to support the global avocado industry stakeholders in their collective efforts toward market expansion in the U.S.,” according to its website.

Board members broaden their industry understanding and knowledge and build relationships with global leaders from the avocado industry in the U.S., the website says.
