The Packer and Farm Journal are presenting two free web seminars on technology and how it can solve problems from traceability to food waste and supply chain visibility.

The first seminar, at 1 p.m. Pacific June 23, is “IBM Food Trust: How Will Blockchain Help Shape the Future of Fresh Produce?”

Registration is online.

“Data has become the most essential ingredient in the world’s food supply,” according to a news release. “A smarter, safer and more sustainable food system is positively transforming businesses while providing peace of mind throughout the farm-to-table food chain.”

The IMB Food Trust connects growers, producers, retailers and others with a shared record of data that can improve efficiencies, minimize waste and enhance food safety, according to the release.

The seminar panel features:

  • Suzanne Livingston, director of offerings for IBM Food Trust and IMB Blockchain Transparent Supply;
  • Natalie Dyenson, vice president of food safety and quality for Dole Food Co.; and
  • Paul Lightfoot, president and founder of BrightFarms.

The second seminar, “The Cost and Impact of Food Spoilage and Supply Chain Visibility Solutions,” is at 1 p.m. Pacific June 30.

Registration is available online.

The seminar is in partnership with CalAmp, which uses connectivity and real-time analytics to improve efficiencies in different industries.

Each year, 1.8 billion tons of food is wasted, according to a news release, and the pandemic has only increased the problem, resulting in “an unforgiving financial toll on companies and untold health hazards for the end customer,” according to a news release. The solution lies in companies have proper cold chain infrastructure, according to the release.

Panelists in the web seminar are:

  • Jeff Newman, vice president of supply chain and visibility solution sales at CalAmp;
  • Chris Zanobini, president and CEO of Ag Association Management Services;
  • Bryan Presley, produce procurement manager at Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions; and
  • Mike Jones, principal at the Pallet Alliance.
