After ten years and helping to protect billions of pounds of fresh-cut produce, SmartWash Solutions is celebrating its contribution to the produce industry.

The Salinas, Calif. company said in a news release that its product treats more than five billion pounds of produce each year, or about 20 billion servings annually.

SmartWash Solutions was created by Taylor Farms after an E. coli spinach outbreak in 2006, to mitigate bacterial cross-contamination. Today, SmartWash Solutions has partnerships in the U.S. and is expanding in Europe and Australia, according to the release.

SmartWash Solutions has been recognized for its technology on several occasions, according to the release:

  • Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Science & Technology Circle of Excellence Award (First-Ever, 2017);
  • Food Quality Award by Dupont and Food Quality Magazine awarded to SmartWash customer Taylor Farms Foodservice (2013); and
  • United Fresh Food Safety Innovation Award: Best new product (2011).

Since it was introduced, the release said SmartWash Solutions has protected over 43 billion pounds of fresh-cut produce, using proprietary wash enhancers for both conventional and organic products.

“SmartWash Solutions is the only all-in-one food safety company offering enhanced chemistry, process control equipment, data collection and management, annual hands-on training and in-field service,” Steven Swarts, director of business development for SmartWash Solutions, said in the release.

Swarts said in an e-mail that SmartWash is still a subsidiary of Taylor Fresh Foods but works with many other processors in the U.S. who are direct competitors to Taylor and each other. SmartWash Solutions is available worldwide to anyone, he said.
