Editor’s note: This is the fourth installment in a five-part series examining the growth of Oasis Dates. Together, the series is intended to offer an insider’s blueprint for building an iconic produce brand from the ground up.
When building an iconic brand in a crowded produce department, winning on consumer taste and high quality is only the cost of entry. To drive explosive growth, a brand needs a single, undeniable hook — and Oasis Dates is planting its flag on versatility.
While Oasis Dates knew it had a powerhouse product capable of extending beyond seasonal displays or niche baking recipes, turning that everyday potential into category growth required a defining hook. To spearhead its commercial launch, the brand has trademarked the bold claim: “Earth’s Most Versatile Fruit.”
In the first three installments of The Packer’s five-part series on a blueprint for building an iconic produce brand, Oasis Dates CEO Adam Cooper outlined the bedrock elements of category disruption: laying a strong operational foundation of team and culture, engineering a field-to-shelf innovation and sustainability strategy, and establishing a roadmap to double category sales. Now, as the brand prepares for its commercial debut, Cooper and his team are tackling the pivotal marketing challenge: defining the brand’s core unique selling proposition.
“To differentiate within a crowded, healthy snacking space, we wanted to be bold, and claiming Oasis Dates as ‘Earth’s Most Versatile Fruit’ is, of course, bold,” Cooper says. “And the idea was grounded in actual consumer behaviors and beliefs. As we started building the versatility resume of Oasis Dates, it became clear to us that this is our unique selling proposition.”
The journey to defining Oasis Dates’ unique selling proposition was directly informed by the brand’s immersive consumer research study. By pairing Circana market data with hands-on field research — tracking shoppers from pantry storage habits to grocery aisle navigation — the team uncovered a critical opportunity: while prospective buyers hesitate due to a simple lack of usage education, existing fans consider dates a multi-occasion staple.
Whether enjoyed alongside morning coffee, tossed into salads, or eaten straight out of the bag for nonperishable on-the-go energy, consumer habits clearly showed that dates transcend a single daypart or demographic. Grounding its go-to-market plan in these actual daily routines, Oasis Dates formalized this multiuse behavior into a protected, core brand asset to lead its retail launch.
“Everything we do from a marketing point of view will start with Oasis Dates being Earth’s Most Versatile Fruit,” says Cooper. “We’ve trademarked the tagline and we believe it will be the core of our category and our brand for years to come.”
From Versatility to Velocity
A trademarked tagline lays the groundwork but executing it in today’s fast-moving retail and digital ecosystem requires translating broad versatility into fast, bite-sized messaging. To cut through the noise of lightning-fast social feeds and bustling grocery aisles, Oasis Dates partnered with creative agencies to build the “Oasis Dates plus everything” campaign framework — pairing dates with health benefits, sports, activities, and culinary pairings through high-impact, colorful creative designed to instantly stop shoppers in their tracks.
“The beauty of versatility is that it can mean a lot of things. For the same reason, though, it’s hard to communicate versatility in this world of lightning-fast social media and digital advertising,” Cooper explains. “We used really bold and colorful creative on our advertising and in-store displays to stop people while they’re scrolling and stop people while they’re in the store with their carts, and so this bold creative approach is rarely seen in produce.”
The strategy is already yielding compelling validation in consumer testing. In research studies evaluating the campaign, 86% of consumers agreed the messaging felt personally relevant to them. Crucially for retail partners, 90% of consumers reported an intent to purchase Oasis Dates specifically after viewing the creative.
To capitalize on that consumer intent, the brand is backing the campaign rollout with a massive marketing push timed directly ahead of the holiday season.
“That’s really important for retailers to merchandise Oasis Dates prominently to take advantage of our multimillion-dollar media investment, which is launching on Nov. 2,” Cooper says.
Minimalism Meets Brand Equity: Crafting a High-Impact Shelf Presence
In the produce aisle, packaging serves as a brand’s primary billboard, where products have a brief one-to-two-second window to command a shopper’s attention. For Cooper, drawing on his leadership history with Wonderful Pistachios, Halos, and POM, packaging design is the single most critical asset in establishing market presence.
“Product packaging is the most important element in developing a strong brand,” Cooper says. “I’m personally a minimalist and know the importance and challenge of telling a story in the simplest way possible. At Oasis, the most important element of package design is to keep it clean and clearly tell the brand story through the package.”
“What we’ve observed in produce and consumer goods, is the front of packages get swarmed with clouds of logos and statements and claims, and it’s all noise. It feels like a NASCAR car — just logos everywhere.”
Developing that minimal aesthetic required solving a complex operational challenge: engineering a unified visual identity that could seamlessly accommodate a broad rollout out of the gate while scaling for future line extensions. The team evaluated dozens of concepts before landing on a flexible design architecture capable of spanning four core medjool SKUs — organic and conventional, pitted and whole — alongside date-based product innovations and new varieties.
Visual storytelling on the pouch relies on deliberate color palettes and subtle design cues. Bold colors inspired by the U.S. Southwest are paired with premium black accents and artistic product depictions. At the top of each package, subtle crown-like ridges serve a dual purpose: honoring the textured, uneven skin of the medjool and nodding to its reputation as the “king of dates,” says Cooper.
“Altogether, this brand block — we know how important it is to sell on shelf as a brand block — we believe will help us double the category over the next five years,” Cooper says. “When we did consumer research and virtual shelf studies with our brand block, we found consumers chose Oasis because they thought the packaging looked high quality, healthy and tasty.”
That consumer validation is already driving strong buy-in across the retail sector as the commercial launch approaches. By combining clean minimalism with a commanding shelf presentation, Oasis Dates aims to give produce buyers a turnkey merchandising solution that converts impulse views into sustained repeat sales.
“We’ve got a lot of excitement from our retailers specifically about the packaging,” Cooper adds. “We believe it’s one of the core reasons why retailers are choosing us and why it will sell more in-store.”
Achieving that clean visual impact was not without its challenges.
“Taking a minimalist approach is very hard, and it’s a good forcing mechanism and reminder to only use what’s going to matter, what’s going to drive a consumer to pick up your package, and then what will drive them to buy again,” Cooper explains. “What we’ve observed in produce and consumer goods, is the front of packages get swarmed with clouds of logos and statements and claims, and it’s all noise. It feels like a NASCAR car — just logos everywhere.”
Rather than filling the front panel with seals and certifications, Oasis Dates placed important certifications on the back of the package and reserved the front for consumer-focused benefits. Anchor messaging centers squarely on Earth’s Most Versatile Fruit, supported by three concise pillars: a healthy sweet treat, a natural energy boost, and a culinary secret weapon.
By cutting through the visual noise, Oasis Dates believes these clear consumer benefits create a far stronger connection at the shelf.
The Innovation Scorecard: Identifying Added Value
Beyond branding and shelf presence, sustaining brand equity over time requires a disciplined pipeline for new product development. To ensure Oasis Dates avoids chasing short-lived food trends or launching products that falter at retail, Cooper implemented a strategic framework he originally developed during his tenure at The Wonderful Company: the “Innovation Scorecard.”
The scorecard acts as a rigorous gatekeeping mechanism designed to evaluate ideas multidimensionally from day one. The model forces cross-functional accountability by examining key questions across consumer benefit, retail acceptance, brand fit, operational feasibility, sustainability and long-term business impact.
“It’s a scorecard to help you evaluate ideas, not to necessarily come up with ideas,” Cooper explains. “At a high level, this includes asking yourself: ‘Is there a consumer benefit here? Is this something that a consumer will buy? Will retailers take this? Does it fit within your brand? Is there a path for more sustainability within it? Is it operationally feasible, or can it be in the future?’ And then, at the end of the day, most importantly, is it going to add value to your company?”
As data accumulates throughout a product’s development cycle, the scorecard continuously re-evaluates the initiative — tracking whether key parameters move from a green light to red, or vice versa.
“These things help you decide: Do I continue this project, or do I stop? And that’s often one of the hardest things to do is to say, ‘Stop’ after doing a lot of work,” Cooper says. “Innovation is hard because something like 80% or more of innovations don’t last to year two. Fortunately, at Wonderful we had a lot of success with innovations from Wonderful Pistachios No Shells and lots of other things, and so we believe that this framework will work for us...to help inform our innovation pipeline.”
Embracing the Functional Foods Frontier
When Oasis Dates applied its Innovation Scorecard to its pipeline, one concept emerged with green lights across every evaluation metric: functional snacking. Recognizing that modern produce consumers want products that “do a job for them,” the brand developed its new Date Boost line — leveraging the intrinsic nutritional benefits of medjool dates, such as fiber, potassium and natural energy, and pairing them with targeted functional callouts and trending flavor profiles.
“We know that Oasis Dates on their own have functional health benefits,” Cooper says. “Through our consumer research, we found consumers were craving more from their snacks. Functional health is forever, and that was really important to us — to focus on functional health and then develop a series of products that combine medjool dates with functional benefits, along with great flavors.”
The line debuts with two targeted SKUs: Salted Caramel Energy Date Boost, featuring 100 milligrams of caffeine from green coffee bean extract (equivalent to a standard cup of coffee), and Cinnamon Oat Gut Health Date Boost, which delivers 8 grams of fiber as a source for digestive wellness.
Cooper says the consumer response in testing proved immediate and decisive, with 70% to 80% of respondents expressing strong purchase intent.
To maximize impact on shelf, the packaging uses a premium black base with vibrant color pops that echo the core brand identity while clearly carving out a distinct functional destination. Merchandised in dedicated retail shippers alongside core medjool SKUs, the Boost line is designed to strengthen the entire shelf footprint.
“Retailers have been really excited about launching these,” Cooper notes. “What we’re finding is that retailers want to take the whole line because they know the brand block will do better. Each of these items will do better as part of the full brand block — the core modules plus these Date Boosts — and so that’s been a really good formula for us so far.”
Driving In-Store Execution: Merchandising Tools for Retail Scale
A bold strategy and premium packaging mean little without seamless execution at the retail level. Understanding that high-impact floor displays drive incremental velocities and attract first-time category buyers, Oasis Dates is rolling out a suite of three specialized merchandising tools right out of the gate, with additional fixtures slated for 2027.
“From my experience at The Wonderful Company, I know the importance of in-store merchandising tools,” Cooper says. “They drive incremental velocities. They attract new consumers to the brand. So, we’re launching from day 1 at Oasis Dates three different merchandising tools, and then we have more coming in 2027.”
The initial toolkit includes a specialized medjool display shipper featuring campaign creative like “Oasis Dates Plus Smoothies” — strategically designed for cross-merchandising next to high-traffic produce items like bananas. The second fixture is a dedicated Oasis Boost display shipper showcasing both the Salted Caramel Energy and Cinnamon Gut Health SKUs with prominent flavor and health-benefit cues. Anchoring the lineup is a permanent rack display engineered to house the full Oasis Dates product portfolio.
While Oasis Dates has already set the ambitious “2X in 5" target to double overall category sales over the next five years, Cooper believes these permanent fixtures provide the necessary velocity to beat that benchmark.
“These racks will really enable retailers to double the category, potentially even faster than our five-year plan,” Cooper says.
