South Texas leader dies

South Texas produce pioneer Lynn Jones, 97, died Sept. 27.

Jones began farming in south Texas in 1948, according to an obituary on the website legacy.com. He eventually expanded his operations to Mexico, growing onions, cantaloupe, and peppers in Mexico’s Tampico area. Jones also grew citrus in the Mission, Texas, area, according to the obituary. In 1997, Jones was inducted into the Texas Produce Association’s Produce Hall of Fame. 

Jones, resident of Mission, attended high school at Mercedes High School, Mercedes, Texas, and attended the University of Texas at Austin.

He joined the Army Air Corps in 1941, serving in Panama and the China-Burma-India theaters. Jones also served as Director of Flying Training at the Abilene Army Air Base in Texas.
