Organics Unlimited GROW tours showcase social responsibility

Organics Unlimited, San Diego, recently gave tours of its Mexico farms to employees from Portland, Ore.-based New Season Market.

The tours in the state of Colima were designed to highlight Organics Unlimited’s social responsibility program GROW (Giving Resources and Opportunities to Workers), according to a news release. The group visited a Christmas Posada in Cofradia de Suchitlan with elementary school students, who were given Christmas gifts wrapped by the New Seasons Market employees.

“By experiencing events like the Christmas Posada and being on the ground at the farms, our valued partners get an inside look at how everything really works,” Mayra Velazquez de Leon, Organics Unlimited president and CEO, said in the release.

Jeff Salchenberg, assistant produce category manager for News Seasons Market, said the company is a long-time customer of Organics Unlimited and its GROW label bananas.

“Sending our (employees) down there to take part during the holidays provided an ideal opportunity to build connections to the communities where GROW bananas develop and see true joy in the eyes of children,” Salchenberg said in the release. “It gives us all perspective on how blessed we are and how much good we can do for others.”

GROW programs promote sustainability, education and health care in communities. GROW organic banana purchases have raised almost $2 million for the programs since 2005, according to the release.
