Exporters whose preferred transportation is airline cargo are seeing fewer options as the COVID-19 pandemic has grounded flights.

With longer shipping times via ocean, companies are seeking options to counter food waste and keep shipments fresh for longer periods. PerfoTec’s liner bags offer bulk packaging solutions for transporting and storing fresh produce, according to a news release.

Liner bags help extend shelf life by minimizing dehydration, according to PerfoTec. The company’s bags are different than tradition modified-atmosphere packaging bags, made with a material with a high water vapor permeability, which prevents formation of water droplets — ideal breeding grounds for fungi and bacteria, according to the release.

“This ensures that, without the product drying out, the water vapor is released through the liner bag,” according to the release. “As a result, the product remains dry in the PerfoTec Liner Bag with considerably less chance of mold and bacteria development.”

Tests show that when used on healthy, fresh produce at the optimal storage temperature in a commodity-specific PerfoTec Liner Bag, freshness is extended “significantly,” according to the release.

This will reduce food waste and provide an opportunity to expand into new markets,” according to the release.
