Hydroponic greenhouse grower BrightFarms’ next project is in Hendersonville, N.C., with a 280,000-square-foot facility estimated to produce up to two million pounds of leafy greens to retailers in the region.

The expansion is driven by demand from consumers and retailers in the region, according to a news release from BrightFarms.

North Carolina officials praised the plans for BrightFarms’ $21 million investment.

“Agriculture has always been a strong driver in North Carolina, and BrightFarms’ expansion is good for our state,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said in a news release. “They are committed to conserving water, land and energy resources while growing their business — green economic development that is good for the company, the community and the workers who will support them.”

BrightFarms has production facilities in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Illinois and Ohio, according to the release.
