Bee Sweet promoting heirloom navels
Heirloom navels are available again from Fowler, Calif.-based Bee Sweet Citrus.
The heirloom variety is derived from the Washington, the first variety brought to North America from Brazil more than 100 years ago, according to a news release. Heirlooms are grown on older blocks of trees using traditional farming practices.
“While mandarins make a fabulous snack for work or school, it’s hard not to encourage consumers to try our Heirloom navels while they’re in season,” director of communications Monique Bienvenue said in the release. “Unlike other navel varieties, its taste is never compromised by acidity, and this variety is often sought out for its amazing flavor.”
Other navel varieties are available year-round, but the high-brix heirlooms are in season only in the winter months.
