Casa Sanchez expands guacamole recall

Casa Sanchez Foods is expanding a recall of Real Gaucamole to include the company’s spicy guacamole.

The original recall was on Nov. 15 after the Food and Drug Administration found Listeria Monocytogenes in a random sample of the company’s Real Guacamole. Two days later, Casa Sanchez included Spicy Guacamole in the recall. The company reported the second recall came after a second package of the guacamole tested positive for the pathogen.

The guacamole is in 9-ounce tubs and was distributed to retailers in the California Bay area and surrounding counties. No illnesses have been linked to the guacamole, according to a news release. The initial recall was for Real Guacamole with a Universal Product Code of # 0 78732 004122 on the front label. A white sticker on the bottom shows the manufacturing code of 279. The expiration date was Nov. 10.

According to the Casa Sanchez website, Real Guacamole ingredients include avocados, onions, cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes.

The expanded recall includes three products with different Universal Product Codes and numerous lot numbers:

  • UPC 0 78732 00412 2 with lot numbers of 276-279, 282-285, 289-293, 296, 300, 303, 306, 310, 313, 317 and 318;
  • UPC 0 78732 00426 9 with lot numbers of 276-278, 284, 285, 289, 291, 296, 310, 313 and 318; and
  • UPC 0 78732 00431 0 with lot numbers of 275, 276, 285, 289 and 313.

According to the news release, the company stopped making the guacamole in mid-November until a source of the pathogen is found.
