Houston-based MountainKing Potatoes has launched a new fall sales promotion presenting the company’s three popular yellow-flesh varieties.

From the last week of October through the end of the year, retail grocers can participate in MountainKing’s Butter Potato Bash by merchandising the company’s 5-pound Butter Reds, 5-pound Butter Golds and 5-pound Butter Creams, all fresh harvested from Colorado’s San Luis Valley, according to a news release.

“It’s a promotion that truly presents a trifecta of flavors,” Andreas Trettin, marketing director for MountainKing, said in the release. “We’re anticipating a tremendous consumer response, particularly as we head into the holiday season.”

Participating stores will win a new MountainKing produce knife, a handy tool every produce manager needs to keep their departments attractive and tidy, the release said. To receive their new produce knife, produce managers can simply email a photo of their display and store location to atrettin@mtnking.com, the release said.

Three overall grand prize winners will receive either a Blackstone Grill, Air Fryer or an Instapot. Winners will be selected based on their display’s creativity, originality and overall sales results, according to the release.

Consumer-facing social media support from MountainKing will take place throughout the promotional period, the release said.

In the last 12 months, sales dollars of yellow-flesh potatoes are up 15% and unit volume is up 7.5%, according to Circana and the U.S. Potato Board. Shoppers also pay on average $1.18 per pound across all yellow-flesh pack sizes, the release said.

With their European origin, MountainKing’s Butter Reds combine the cooking benefits of red potatoes with the flavor of gold potatoes. Its Butter Golds, with their naturally buttery flavor, offer a smooth and creamy flavor ideal for mashing, while MountainKing’s Butter Creams, with their russet skin and rich, golden interior, make them ideal for baking and frying, the release said.

MountainKing Potatoes is one of the world’s largest growers of high-flavor potato varieties, and about 1 million U.S. households enjoy MountainKing products every week, according to the company.
