Retail citrus sales showed mixed trends in 2023, according to a report from the International Fresh Produce Association.

Retail citrus sales showed mixed trends in 2023, according to a report from the International Fresh Produce Association.

The IFPA Produce Insights report, compiled in conjunction with retail scan data from Circana, revealed total retail sales increased for lemons, mandarins, tangelos, tangerines and limes. Retail orange sales were steady, according to the retail numbers, and sales were down for grapefruit and tangelos.

Here is a summary of sales by citrus variety:

  • Total orange sales in 2023 were $1.2 billion, unchanged from 2022 but up slightly from $1.1 billion in 2021.
  • Mandarin sales in 2023 topped $1.9 billion in 2023, up from $1.8 billion in 2022 but even with $1.9 billion in 2021.
  • Lemon sales in 2023 totaled $875.2 million, up from $871 million in 2022 and up from $844.6 million in 2021.
  • Lime sales totaled $796.4 million in 2023, down from $785.3 million in 2022 but up from $699.3 million in 2021.
  • Grapefruit sales in 2023 reached $194.3 million in 2023, down from $202.4 million in 2022 and down from $209.5 million in 2021.
  • Tangerine sales in 2023 were rated at $82.7 million in 2023, up from $75.7 million in 2022 and up from $66 million in 2021.
  • Tangelo sales in 2023 totaled $33.2 million, down from $33.6 million in in 2022 and down from $37.9 million in 2021.
