A large grocery wholesaler is partnering with a vertical farm company to grow greens on the premises of its distribution centers — improving faster, fresher access to retailers.

The two companies are UNFI, a grocery wholesaler serving 30,000 locations across North America, and Square Roots, a New York City-based CEA company, or controlled environment agriculture, growing produce inside warehouses, one row on top of another. They’re calling this initiative co-location.

In our Tip of the Iceberg podcast episode, we have Dorn Wenninger, UNFI’s senior vice president of produce, and Tobias Peggs, Square Roots CEO, who co-founded the vertical indoor farm company with Kimbal Musk, executive chairman.

Check out the the chat with these produce leaders:

Produce from the first Square Roots farm co-located with UNFI will be sold to UNFI’s retail customers in Wisconsin and Minnesota, including the Twin Cities metro area.
