The Watsonville-based California Strawberry Commission is issuing a challenge to consumers this summer.

The commission is asking consumers to take its Get Snacking Challenge to inspire them to create, name and share an original strawberry snack of the summer via Instagram using #GetSnackingChallenge, according to a news release.

Each month, a winner and two runners-up will be selected for the best strawberry snack and a chance to advance to the finals and win a $1,000 grand prize.

The Strawberry Snack of the Summer will be selected by popular vote from the top three snacks for each of five months of the challenge, the release said.

“Clinical research suggests that eating just one serving of eight strawberries a day may improve heart health, help manage diabetes, support brain health and reduce the risk of some cancers,” according the release.

Besides traditional nutrients, strawberries are rich in phenolic compounds, like flavonoids and ellagic acid, “which are the focus of intense study due to their antioxidant, anticancer and antimutagenic properties,” the release said.

The campaign will run through August and feature digital advertising, influencer partnerships and national media outreach “to leverage consumer desire for fun, simple snack ideas and make California strawberries top of mind.”

Snacks supply nearly one-quarter of the daily calories consumed by Americans today, the commission said.
